PS 102
The schools welcome mural project was recently featured on their NYC

Department of Education website. The school community was very proud

of this project. The Student Government Organization will be having their

Annual Food Drive. All food items will be donated to the Bay Ridge Pantry.

PS/IS 180 - Various students from the art class participated in the neighborhood Halloween Art Contest. Students painted Halloween scenes on windows in local stores on 13 Avenue in Dyker Heights. In the spirit of the holidays, student will be participating in “Toys for Tots,” “Community Support Drive to Support Our Soldiers,” and hosting a food drive for “Reaching Out Community Center.” We wish a Happy Thanksgiving to our neighbors and friends.

PS 186 -
The school hosted (2) Middle School Information Sessions. They had 80 parents attend these informative meetings. Parents were so eager to learn about the middle school process and the opportunities that are available to their children.
On October 8th, the school Cheerleaders and Chorus performed at the annual Columbus parade. What an honor for the students to perform at the viewing stand for our Community Superintendent Karina Costantino. The students, parent and staff were so excited to hear that our Superintendent was chosen to be one of the Grand Marshall's this year. It was truly a wonderful community event. Congratulations to our Community Superintendent Karina Costantino.
Barbara Solomon, School Psychologist Brooklyn Assessment Center was the guest speaker at a recent parent workshop at the school. Parents from Pre-K and Kindergarten were eager to learn about the stages of child development. There were 60 parents in attendance for the two workshops which were hosted by the Parent Coordinator Elaine Delaney and the Pre-K Social Worker Mrs. Katz. A special thanks to Barbara Solomon.
The schools students, parents and faculty participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Pink Bracelets were sold raising $500.00 for the American Cancer Society. On Friday, October 21 students and staff also wore pink t-shirts to raise awareness. P.S. 186 Staff also had a team and marched in the Breast Cancer Awareness walk.
The schools Student Council, students, parents and staff participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Walk. The Walk took place on Halloween. Children walked around the block raising awareness for the JDRF foundation. A total of $2,100 was raised.
Pre-K celebrated Fall Family Fun Day. Parents, grandparents were invited in to join their children for this fun day. Parents were able to make a craft with their children, enjoy a great book together, dance and refreshments were served.
The school held its annual Literacy Pajama Night. Students, parents and staff wore their pajamas to the event. The theme this year was “Night on the Ocean Floor.” Students made crafts with their parents, enjoyed reading with their parents, watched the Magic School Bus and refreshments were served. Over 300 families were in attendance.
The New York City Fire Department is visiting all classrooms this week. Students are learning about the importance of Fire Safety.
Penny Harvest is now in the second week and has already met the 25 sack challenge.

PS/IS 229 -
The PTA sponsored a school-wide Spirit Day in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The middle school C.H.A.M.P.S. program was inaugurated with an after-school soccer program; S. Kelly, teacher.
The PTA sponsored a Harvest Walk-a-Thon, creating a beautiful Pumpkin Patch “island” as students walked along the perimeter of the school yard. Students in Pre-K to grade 2 received gourds as a memento of the event.
Students in grades 5-8 participated in the Bay Ridge Community Council Halloween Art Contest, painting original seasonal designs on the windows of stores along 86 Street; M. Dorval, teacher.
The PTA hosted a Halloween Party for students in grades 3-5 with dancing and snacks.

IS 30 - On the weekend of October 16-17, the school walked for breast cancer in Prospect Park and also, cleaned up and planted bulbs at McKinley Park. At school they hosted for parents a Healthy eating class and Info on completing the HS application for parents.

IS 201 - The schools Marching Band participated in the Brooklyn Columbus Day Parade.
The Federation of Italian-Americans Organizations of Brooklyn donated $500
to the school band.
The schools Eureka Science Team competed at Abraham Lincoln High School on Monday, Nov 7th and placed 7th in a field of 116 competitors in devising a catapult.
Mrs. Brennan was honored with a plaque by CSA President Earnest Logan at the CSA Annual Meeting on Nov. 8th at Food and Finance High School for longest service in a specific title.

IS 220 - The seventh grade science classes of Mr. Tubbs have enrolled in the Mars
Student Imaging Project, led by Arizona State University and NASA. Students
will have the opportunity to evaluate and assess images of Mars and collaborate
with ASU/NASA scientists to evaluate data collected by NASA spacecraft
currently orbiting Mars. The final portion of the project will involve students
directing a camera on board a Mars orbiter to take a new, never-before-seen
photograph of the surface of Mars.
October was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The schools staff held
Their annual fundraiser, students and school staff showed support by wearing pink that day. All proceeds ($1402.00) were donated to The Cancer Center at
Maimonides Medical Center during the school assembly on Friday, October 28th.
The school would like to thank all for their support and generosity.

IS 259 - The school sponsored its Open House for Gifted and Talented Students on November 2nd. Any parents who missed the event may call Diane Castignani, Parent Coordinator to schedule a tour. She can be reached at 718 833-1000 ext. 2200.
On Monday, November 14th, approximately 300 McKinley dance students will attend a free, hour-long performance by professional dancers in the Graham II Company in the school auditorium. This presentation is part of an Arts Excellence in Education outreach program. Over the past several years, McKinley dance teacher, Patricia Applegate, has forged a partnership with the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance Director.
McKinley students successfully participated in the Bay Ridge Community Council’s Halloween Window Painting Contest winning 6 Gold and 4 Silver medals.
On November 3rd the school sponsored a Bowl-A-Thon honoring the memory of former student and fire fighter, Joseph Graffignino. The monies raised will go towards a scholarship fund in his name.
The school and the I Love Me Campaign held a feather fundraiser to help raise money for breast cancer and the Susan Komen Foundation. Students and staff participated in this fundraiser and raised over $700. Guidance Counselor Ms. Madonia and the I Love Me Campaign also held their annual Boo Bake Sale on October 31st. Proceeds from the Boo Bake Sale go to various children charities such as Autism Awareness and Juvenile Diabetes. In total, Ms. Madonia and the I Love Me Campaign raised $1200 in the month of October for charity.

PS 102- The School Community is proud to announce that its school garden may be featured in the First Lady Michelle Obama's book entitled The White House
Kitchen Garden. It will feature school and community gardens from around the
country that encourage healthy eating. At 102 the students grow their own
vegetables which are harvested and included in the school lunch menu. A special

P.S. 160- 5th grade students presented a special assembly to celebrate the 

birthday of the Constitution of the United States. This was followed up with a trip to the Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 are participating in Chess in the Classrooms. On
September 24th, P.S. 160's Chess Team came in 3rd place, one half point out of

1, in a citywide competition. On October 10th they won 15t place out of 22
schools in the city. Several students won every game they played
.

5th Grade students are participating in the Global Partners Project, a Mayor
Bloomberg initiative
.

5th Grade students are also participating in Legal Lives, a Brooklyn District
Attorney initiative.

Students in Grade 1 have begun a vocal music partnership and grade 2 has
begun a Chinese dance partnership with Arts Connections.

On October 11th students' families joined our School Safety Committee for our
Public Safety Meeting.


PS/IS180-The SEEALL Academy Middle School Open House will take place October 25, 6:00-8:00 PM. To celebrate the season of fall the PTA will be hosting a Masquerade Ball for grades 6-8 on October 21, a Pumpkin Patch for grades K-5 on October 28, and our annual Halloween Parade for grades K-5 on October 31
.
Starting in October through November the school will be hosting a food drive to
support a local food pantry, Reaching Out Community Center
.

PS/IS229-The School Band participated in the annual Ragamuffin Parade sponsored by the Bay Ridge Community Council; M. Zhou, teacher

IS259-McKinley is the only school in the borough that has been selected to participate in a residency with Rioult Dance Company. The dance students will receive 8 free visits from a Rioult dancer and learn the choreography. Later, they will be invited to audition to perform with the actual company and attend a free show at Kingsborough to watch a professional performance.

 
June 2011

PS102-The school held a ribbon cutting ceremony and unveiled its Welcome mural. It is located in the school yard and was painted by over 400 parent and student volunteers. The mural illustrates the message that all are welcome at PS102. 

PS170-The school was awarded the Laura Bush Library Grant of $5000.

PS186- The PS186 Student Council visited the Holy Family Nursing Home. The students worked with the senior citizens and helped them make a picture frame. Each senior citizen received a frame and a treat. Most important was the time they shared with our children.
Our Parent Cooridnator, Elaine Delaney, received the "Distinguished Women Award" from Senator Martin Golden on May 24. The award was presented to Elaine in Albany for outstanding community service to our school and neighborhood.
Pre-K and Fifth grade hosted international food festivals the week of May 31. Parents and students sampled foods from different countries. Parents and students also learned about the different costumes of each country. We had many parents eattend these wonderful events.
Our 4th grade students hosted their Ballroom culminating event. Students demonstrated all the dances they learned, which included the Tango, Swing, Rumba, Fox Trot and t he Merengue. Over 100 parents were in attendance.
We hosted our Dance Festival and our theme was "Just Dance!". Pre-K through 2nd grade performed for our parents inour schoolyard. Everyone had a fantastic time.
Our chorus will be performing at Borough Hall.

PS/IS192-The school received the 2011 Golden Apple Award from the NYC Department of Sanitation, Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling (DSNY-BWPRR) and NYC Department of Education Sustainability Initiative. The school's recycling program earned top honors as the Citywide and Brooklyn borough winner for the Elementary division in TrashMasters!Super Recyclers!

PS/IS229-As a school we are pleased to announce and celebrate the appointment of our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Jared Shapiro.

PS264-The school's Penny Harvest Roundtable recently made donations to two important organizations, the New York City Coalition for the Homeless and the Wounded Warrior Project. The school is very proud of the generosity and hard work of the new school community.
On Sunday, June 5th the school held a block party and carnival to celebrate the success of the school's first year. A great time was had by all.

IS201-The artwork of Katherine Mamouzellos, class 751, titled TREES, has been selected from over 800 entries to be included in the PS Art 2011 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The art teacher is Dorothy Serposs.
